Lake Huron is named after the native tribe, the Huron, who inhabited the area when it was discovered by French trappers. The Lake is the second largest of the Great Lakes with a water surface covering over 23,000 square miles. It is equivalent in size to the state of West Virginia. This large size means there is lots of shoreline and lots to do.

Lake Huron is bordered by Michigan and Ontario, Canada. Each area offers tremendous vacation getaway opportunities. Here are a few highlights.

If boating and kayaking sound like great fun, the Les Cheneaux Islands make a great vacation getaway. The islands are located on the southern tip of the Upper Peninsula in Michigan. There are over 36 small islands located off of roughly 15 miles of coastline. This makes the area a prime location for waterskiing, leisurely kayaking trips through the islands, exploring or just loafing on the islands. A few of the islands are even inhabited, so you can stop off and enjoy a meal or hear some good stories. Government Island offers camping for those that like to rough it.

If you are looking for a Lake Huron vacation getaway that requires more loafing, Sauble Beach in Ontario is the answer. The beach is seven miles long, the second longest fresh water beach in North America. Sauble Beach is all about relaxing and having a bit of fun. You can lounge the hours away reading a book in the sun or just taking a nap. When you are ready for a bit of action, waterskiing, windsurfing, swimming, tennis and golf are all readily available. Sauble Beach is the place you go to get off the 9 to 5 clock and just do your thing.
