What Is A Dude Ranch?

Nostalgia is definite field of tourism as is revealed by the popularity of the dude ranch over the last 100 plus years. Okay, so what is a dude ranch?

A dude ranch is not a ranch on the beaches of Southern California nor is it a ranch that only surfers and skateboarders attend. Instead, it is a representation of a classic western ranch that takes guest in. The guests go to the ranch because they are nostalgic for the days of the Wild, Wild West or simply are looking for a unique vacation experience.


The dude ranch gets its name from the 1900s. The word dude had a different meaning then and referred to different people. The ranches would take in guests, but from the East Coast of the United States. The workers at the ranch referred to these people as greenhorns or dudes. Greenhorn ranch sounded to insulting, so apparently dude was the name that stuck.

So, what exactly is a dude ranch? Well, it is a ranch where you can experience a degree of life like it was in the days of cowboys and Indians. The question, of course, is to what degree do you really want to experience the life? Some ranches are just glorified hotels and you aren’t expected to do anything other than show up for meals and not wonder off into the hills.



Working ranches are an entirely different beast. On these, you are expected to participate in the upkeep of the ranch. The ranch is a functioning facility producing everything from agricultural food to meet. Some working ranches will expect you to act just like a normal worker while others will give you just a taste of the experience. Again, it is a matter of degree, so make sure you know what you are getting into and that it is something you really want to try!

If you are looking for something beyond the basic tourist vacation, a dude ranch might just do the trick. Make sure to look at what is being offered as there are a host of different experiences that are truly unique.
